The Saga of Tanya the Evil continues in the latest trailer for the anime film from Kadokawa Animation. Based on a series of light novels written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki, The Saga of Tanya the Evil tells the story of a selfish business man who finds himself reincarnated into a world on the brink of a magic-fueled World War I-style conflict. A supernatural being tasks him with living through the war and dying a natural death – or suffer in hell for the sins of his former life. Now the young girl Tanya Degurechaff, she enlists in the army to try to crawl up the ranks and become too valuable to be sent to the front lines of the war.
We’ve previously seen some art of the slight redesigns and tweaks to a number of the characters and the final version of Mary Sue, the film’s antagonist. The film will pick up where the anime series ended to continue the story following the anime’s massive success. The story follows the events of the anime when a new nation begins to enter the world-encompassing fray and how a delicate alliance might come unhinged thanks to the vendetta Mary Sue has against Tanya Degurechaff for the death of her father.

The new trailer, posted to Kadokawa Animation’s YouTube channel, makes it clear that Tanya Degurechaff hasn’t lost any of her insanity or strange charisma, pirouetting while the military generals talk about the fate of the war. We get to see Mary Sue embarking on a rage-fueled mission with her steed-like flying machine. The end of the trailer highlights an incredibly elaborate and carnage-filled aerial battle with Tanya at its center. We’re even shown a collective attack that seemingly levels a town-sized encampment. The destructive powers on display are like nothing the show ever tackled.
Additionally, new cast members have been announced. These include Cho (One Piece, Naruto, Inuyasha) as Loriya; Takashi Inagaki (perhaps best known for his role as Yen Sid in Kingdom Hearts) as Joseph Dzhugashvili; Toshiyuki Morikawa (the 1997 Berserk, Detective Conan, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, One-Punch Man) as William Douglas Drake; Jun Fukushima (A Place Further than the Universe, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) as Edgar; and Mutsumi Tamura (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Naruto, Overlord) as BB.
Though a promo teaser previously dangled some small snippets of action and drama in front of fans, the latest trailer really does give everyone more to chew on and absorb. Seeing the fan-favorite anti-hero in action once again feels exciting and fresh with the increased scale the budget of a film can provide. No continuation of the series was planned with its conclusion. With enough popularity to fuel the creation of an anime movie, the possibility of a second season or movie has been left open if the film continuation of The Saga of Tanya the Evil finds enough of an audience.
