The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949)

Credit: dvdizzy.comA tall, slender, shovel-footed schoolteacher competes for the love of a rich farmer’s daughter until he is confronted by the headless horseman.  Also, one guy gets water poured down his pants and no one even notices.

[If you want to see a clip of this film, I vote for this one on YouTube.]

Voiced and narrated by Bing Crosby, this cartoon embodies everything that is good about the Halloween holiday: It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s family-friendly. I can’t say that about too many other Halloween movies.

You know, it’s easy for a lot of people to forget themselves during this holiday. Some get so caught up in the party that they let it go too far. When the celebrating starts, they inadvertently check their religion at the door.

It’s too easy already to drive away the Holy Ghost without inviting evil influences into our homes. These invitations we unknowingly extend during Halloween celebrations could be through hypnotic rituals, Ouija Boards or even just horror movies that leave us feeling nearer to the prince of darkness than the Prince of Peace.

In other words, before we watch or participate in something, we ought to take a second to consider the source that movie/activity comes from, and then ask ourselves, “Does this make me feel happy?”

So when I wish you “Happy Halloween” I really mean it. I hope you choose to celebrate the happy kind of Halloween where family is the focus and the Holy Ghost is unquestionably welcomed.

For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.

…For every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.

But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil.” – Moroni 7:15-17
